I am working with
Guildford CathedralEducation Centre to create a play that local schools will perform to commemorate its 50th birthday. It will take place over 3 days in January 2011 and today we spent time looking at 5 decades of local history in order to come up with a good title. At the moment the favourite title is "Brick in the wall" It relates to the story of a lady called Eleanora, who single handed led a campaign after the second world war to get people to buy a brick for the cathedral. People could then sign the bricks. It was a success and it was not long before enough bricks were bought. I encouraged Charlotte, one of the Cathedral team to start a blog and she did and called it
Guildford Cathedral is 50
My family own bricks in the Cathedral, It may not be the most traditional looking Cathedral and has been compared to looking like a factory, But it is one of the most beautiful on the inside. I always know I'm "home" when I see it on the horizon

Your right Viv. I think it is one of the lightest Cathedrals I have ever been in. I had my graduation ceremony there so I also have some personel connection.

It was built by the Dove bros building firm and the materials supplied mainly by Moons Timber as they were then called, where my dad was the Manager. My cousin Kate was in the choir there. It has held many ceremonies happy and sad, one of the saddest being the memorial service of young Sarah Payne
