It seems that in this 50th year since the UN drew up a declaration of child rights none other than Football clubs are starting to champion the cause. This year the Youth and children's team from CMS are running a drama project called World to Rights around the UK with schools using cathedrals as venues. At some stage in the day I am always excited about bringing out a Barcelona football shirt and asking the children what Barcelona FC has to do with children's rights. I have been surprised by how many children actually know. Barcelona do not advertise any company sponsor on their shirts but in fact have a 5 year deal with UNICEF to raise their profile and generate income for them. This example by one of the richest clubs in the world it seems is beginning to catch on. Aston Villa FC gave up a lucrative sponsorship deal with a casino last year to support Acorns children hospices on their shirts. I have been informed by a trustworthy source that Sheffield Wednesday are about to follow suit as well with a local children's charity. These Football advocates for children have been a great source of encouragement and good role models for young people on our tour and my ear is to the ground about who will be next.
