We have been on the historical trail again with a trip to the Lahore Museum and Jahangir’s tomb. The Museum was spacious, cool and a well presented place, with artefacts and paintings from the British and Moghal era’s. It also had displays of Islamic, Sikh and Buddhist history. Unfortunately information about what you were looking at was a little scarce so I haven’t come away too much the wiser.
Jahangir’s tomb was an impressive place. We drove a little out of Lahore across the Ravi river. As he was a Moghul King it was situated in impressive Mohgul gardens, with fountains, trees and lush grass.
The other evening all the family went out on the town to a place called Food Street. It has actually only came into being in the last five years and has a China Town/Carnaby street type gateway to let you know you are there. We stopped off at a restaurant and ate biryani being serenaded by a violinist playing Zabur (Panjabi hymns from the psalms) I obviously gave him the idea we were Christians. Afterwards we went to Mall Road for some ice cream. Going out in Pakistan is a whole family affair, which is something we’re not accustomed to in the west, but it’s actually a lot of fun.
Saturday evening I was intent on visiting a church youth group who have connections with CMS. I had met Pastor Asif Caleb and his wife Gloria a few times in London and at Greenbelt and always said I would see him and his work when I am here. It also gave me a good opportunity to do a bit of trax16 recording and hear from young Christians in Pakistan. It was a very special evening and a real privilege to experience. We joined them in a time of open worship with songs in Urdu and a lot of dancing and clapping (Something I hadn’t encountered here before.) I then had an opportunity to ask them questions about their life as Christians in Pakistan. Listening to their testimonies was really inspirational and a lesson to all Christians back in the UK. They were also a church with a vision, training leaders in churches in many rural areas, where they have no literacy and raising all their funds from among themselves. What was most encouraging was that they were all young – Youth! Listen out for trax16 next month to hear more about their story.
As we enter our final week we are spending more time visiting family and hanging out. Keep checking the flikr Account for pics
